Mission Briefing
Today you will explore the properties of an unknown, mysterious substance that has been hypothesized to cover the surface of Amalthea, a lesser moon of Jupiter. The mysterious substance, nicknamed “Oobleck”, is a non-Newtonian fluid and it behaves in truly bizarre ways. Luckily for us, Oobleck has been simulated on Earth using common household ingredients found in most Americans’ kitchen cabinets: cornstarch and water.
Over the next couple of sessions, you will be asked to design a landing vehicle that can land and float in a sea of Oobleck. In preparation to developing a successful lander, your team will:
Objective 1: Know Your Role
Select your team members and each person’s responsibilities.
Objective 2: Play with Oobleck
Playing is the foundation of discovery! What will you discover about Oobleck?
Objective 3: Test Materials
Unlock the secret of Oobleck’s mysterious behavior!
Objective 4: Define a Property
What is the most important thing for your team to consider about Oobleck when designing an Oobleck lander?
Objective 5: Communicate Creatively
Share what you learned in the most creative way possible!

- Determine a defining property of Oobleck that will help you in designing an Oobleck lander
- Communicate your property to other teams using the most creative method you can!
