Oobleck Lander Design
Today, you are tasked with designing a landing vehicle that can land upright in a sea of Oobleck, float, and be removed forcefully from the Oobleck. This day will work like a mini-Operation Airlift: you will have to design and build your lander while tracking finances and making your lander attractive to potential buyers. Your team will:
Helpful Hints
- Design and build a lander that fits the given constraints of the project
- Track the cost of your lander
- “Sell” your lander to potential buyers
Helpful Hints
- Complete the objectives below and file any diagrams or observations in your team folder to get the maximum score.
- Read the Design Constraints carefully to understand what the lander needs to do.
- You will be judged using the Lander Testing Rubric
- Splitting up some of the objectives between team members might help you move faster.
Objective 1: Know Your Role
Select your team members and each person’s responsibilities.
Objective 2: Sketch a Design
Review the Design Constraints and discuss as a team. Have the R&D Manager sketch your design on the graph paper.
Objective 3: Gather Materials
Have the R&D Manager gather your supplies and record the cost on the Supply Sheet.
Objective 4: Build Your Lander
Construct your lander!
Objective 5: Conduct a Test
Report to the testing area to try out your lander. Remember to take the Lander Testing Rubric. How did it fare?
Objective 6: Share Your Results
Share with other teams. What have they tried that could help you improve your design?
Objective 7: Redesign Your Lander
Adjust your lander to earn more points!
Objective 8: Sell Your Lander
Prepare a sales pitch that showcases why your lander is better than all the others!
